Why a safari from Abu Dhabi?

Real dunes, about an hour from your hotel

More than four-fifths of the United Arab Emirates is the emirate of Abu Dhabi, and most of that is sand. Roughly an hour east of the city the dunes of Al Khatim rise high enough for a proper 4x4 dune drive; three hours south-west, at Liwa, they become the mountains of sand of the Empty Quarter.

A “desert safari” here is a half-day adventure in the dunes — it has nothing to do with wildlife viewing. Most tours bundle hotel pickup, dune bashing, sandboarding and a short camel ride; evening tours add a barbecue dinner and shows at a desert camp. This site explains the differences so that you book the one that suits you.

Abu Dhabi desert safari: quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is a desert safari in Abu Dhabi?

A guided half-day trip into the sand dunes outside the city, usually with hotel pickup. The core is a 4x4 dune drive (“dune bashing”), plus sandboarding and a short camel ride; evening safaris add a barbecue dinner and shows at a camp. It is not a wildlife trip. See the buyer’s guide.

How much does an Abu Dhabi desert safari cost?

When we checked, shared morning safaris started at roughly €40–60 per person and shared evening safaris with dinner at roughly €45–75; tours with quad biking included, overnight stays and private vehicles cost more. Prices move with season and demand — always check the live price.

Morning or evening — which is better?

Evening is the classic: sunset on the dunes, then dinner and shows. Morning is shorter, cheaper and leaves your evening free, and in the hot months a sunrise or morning trip is more comfortable. Compare them on our safaris page.

Is dune bashing safe?

With a licensed operator, a trained driver and seat belts on, it has a good safety record — but it is rough. It is not suitable in pregnancy, for people with back, neck or heart problems, or for infants. Read who should skip it.

When is the best time for a desert safari?

November to March, when days are warm and evenings cool. Safaris run all year, but from May to September daytime heat is intense. See the best time to go.

I am staying in Dubai. Can I join an Abu Dhabi safari?

Most Abu Dhabi safaris collect only from Abu Dhabi hotels. From Dubai it is normally simpler to book a Dubai-based safari, or to combine an Abu Dhabi safari with a night in the capital. Details on our pickup page.
