Liwa is where the settled world ends. A crescent of some fifty small oasis villages stretches for about a hundred kilometres along the northern edge of the Rub’ al Khali — the Empty Quarter, the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. It is the ancestral home of the Bani Yas, the tribal confederation from which the ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai descend.
Behind the palms the dunes rise to a scale the safari deserts near the city cannot match. The most famous, Tal Moreeb (Moreeb Dune), is a wall of sand around 300 metres high with a face of roughly 50 degrees, reached by a paved road about 25 km south of the main town, Mezairaa.
What to see and do: Liwa Oasis & Moreeb Dune
Drive the road to Moreeb Dune
The surfaced road from Mezairaa winds through salt flats and ever-larger dunes — one of the great desert drives of Arabia, and possible in an ordinary car. At the end, the hill-climb strip runs straight up the dune face.
Come for the Liwa festival
Each winter, usually around late December and early January, Moreeb hosts the Liwa International Festival: car and motorbike hill-climbs up the dune, camel and falcon contests, and a camping village. Dates change yearly — check before planning.
See the oasis and its forts
Small restored mud-brick forts and watchtowers stand among the date gardens along the oasis road. In July the Liwa Date Festival celebrates the harvest.
Watch sunrise or sunset from a dune
The colour change on the big dunes at either end of the day is the reason to stay overnight rather than rush back.

How to get there: Liwa Oasis & Moreeb Dune
- By car: about 220–250 km from Abu Dhabi, 2.5 to 3 hours, either via Madinat Zayed or on the truck road via Hameem. Fill up before the desert stretches.
- By tour: GetYourGuide coverage of Liwa is thin — when we checked there were few or no shared day trips from Abu Dhabi. Realistic options are a private driver, a self-drive overnight, or a stay at Qasr Al Sarab, which runs its own desert activities.
- A public bus links Abu Dhabi with Madinat Zayed and Mezairaa, but it does not reach the dunes, so it is of little use to visitors.
Insider tips
- A day trip means five to six hours of driving. Stay a night if you can — see where to stay.
- Do not drive onto the sand without a 4x4, a second vehicle and experience. People get stuck here every weekend.
- Summer daytime temperatures in Liwa are extreme, well above those on the coast. Visit between November and March.
- The Emirates National Auto Museum is on the Hameem route and breaks the journey well.
Tours & tickets that fit: Liwa Oasis & Moreeb Dune
These well-rated experiences pair best with Liwa Oasis & Moreeb Dune:
Overnight from €94 Abu Dhabi: Overnight Desert Safari
The evening programme followed by a night in the desert — simple tent or camp bedding rather than a hotel room — then sunrise and breakfast. The reward is the quiet: once the coaches leave, the camp and the sky are yours. Winter nights are cold; bring a warm layer.
- The full evening safari, then a night at the camp
- Stars after the day visitors leave
- Sunrise and breakfast before the drive back
Private / VIP from €546 per group Abu Dhabi: Private Dune Dinner in the Desert
The private end of the market: your own vehicle and a dinner laid out on the dunes instead of a shared camp with hundreds of guests. It costs many times the price of a shared safari, and as a new listing it had no reviews when we checked, so read the details and the cancellation terms closely.
- A private set-up rather than a shared camp
- Dinner on the dunes for your party only
- New listing — no reviews yet when we checked
