The Louvre Abu Dhabi opened on Saadiyat Island in November 2017, the result of an agreement between the UAE and France. Architect Jean Nouvel designed it as a cluster of white buildings like an Arab medina, sheltered by a dome 180 metres across made of layered metal stars.
Sunlight filtering through the dome falls as moving flecks on the walls and water — the “rain of light”. Beneath it, the galleries tell one story of human creativity from prehistory to the present, placing works from different civilisations side by side.

Stand under the dome
The plaza beneath the dome, open to the sea breeze, is as much the attraction as the collection.
