Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The essential city add-on

If you add one city sight to a desert safari, make it the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Completed in 2007 and named after the founding president of the UAE, who is buried beside it, it is one of the largest mosques in the world, able to hold more than 40,000 worshippers.

The numbers are part of the experience: 82 white marble domes, more than a thousand columns inlaid with semi-precious stones, chandeliers of gilded crystal, and in the main prayer hall a single hand-knotted carpet often cited as the largest in the world. Entry is free.

What to see and do: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Walk the courtyard and arcades

The marble courtyard, with its floral mosaic, is ringed by colonnades reflected in long pools — the classic view of the mosque.

See the main prayer hall

Visitors follow a marked route past the great carpet and beneath the largest chandelier.

Come at dusk

The marble turns from white to gold to blue as the light fades and the lighting comes on. Late afternoon into evening is the most beautiful time.

Free guided walks run at set times, and a paid guided tour adds context and saves time on the entry process.

How to get there: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

  • By taxi: 20 to 30 minutes from the Corniche; about 15 minutes from Yas Island or the airport.
  • Entry for visitors is through the underground visitor centre and its shopping arcade, not straight into the courtyard.
